Sudan's Cultural Heritage and Museums Festival

Last Thursday was the closing ceremony of Sudan's Cultural Heritage and Museums Festival that took place at Sudan's National Museum in  Khartoum, Sudan. This festival started on Satueday February 1st.
The festival was organised by the British Council in cooperation with Sudan's Archaeological Society and the British Museum. Its main aim is to raise awareness of the rich archaeological history of the Sudan.
I believe that the event attracted lots of people as it included a variety of activities for 6 full days from lectures to screening of documentaries and live musical and theatrical performances.
Only time would tell if the event has succeeded in raising awareness among the public.

Open Book Fair in Khartoum

Khartoum brings in a new meaning to the well known "open book fair" activity that happens around the world.

In Khartoum,  Sudan there is "Mafroush" or spread. It's an Arabic word used for describing how you spread a piece of clothe or sheet. Mafroush is the open book fair that happens in the heart of old Khartoum in an area cold the forign market or "Al Tinay".

Book Sellers as well as ordinary people bring in different books for it to be sold or traded in with new books from customers (which was the most genius idea I ever came across).

This happens the first Tuesday of every month from 6pm to 9pm. Don't forget to check it out when you are next in Sudan.
